Early Morning DJing at SL6B

*Tiptoes in, hoping nobody notices that she hasn't posted in months*

O HAI!! There's this SL6B thing going on, y'know? Second Life's 6th Birthday? Yeah, I couldn't care less either until I found out I am DJing every morning for the whole week (see my schedule above, woot!)

There are like, 20 sims, I think. With exhibits and stuff. Kind of like Burning Life but mostly less weird. List of Exhibits List of Events

See you there, maybe.

MST3K color commentary by me

Squeebee Wakawaka, who runs the Mystery Science Theater 3000 fan club and venue in Second Life, has asked me to sit in on and comment about two of the shows I worked on as an intern in Season 10. Showtime is this Friday at 7PM SLT at the Satellite of Love Theater ( http://slurl.com/secondlife/BlaksleeWorld/196/160/24 ), Girl in Gold Boots and SoulTaker. Should be fun. Squee's made a really good system for streaming video inworld, the movies look GREAT.

Secondlife Hobo Group, it's not just a job it's an adventure

A cool time-lapse machinima of 5 days of the Hobo Island sandbox, with some concert footage from the Block Party:

electric burfday

It's my RL birthday today, and my loved ones took me to The Bakken Library and Museum, where we saw all kinds of interesting, steampunky (but electrically-oriented) things:

It was named in honor of Earl Bakken, the inventor of the first portable cardiac pacemaker.

It's in a marvelous old mansion on the shore of Lake Calhoun, and I encourage anyone who visits Minneapolis to make a stop there.

"Rosebud" fashion challenge

Some of you may know that I briefly orbited SL with a clique of the Very Fashionable...these days I'm more like Pluto -- demoted to dwarf planet, dimly drawn toward the influence of more brilliant heavenly bodies -- hey, but at least the Kuiper belt's warmer than Minneapolis this time of year!

So it was with trepidation that I accepted Winter Jefferson's Bare Rose Appreciation Week blogger challenge.

Everybody's got something from Bare Rose, right? Well...not me, it turns out! I may be one of the few people on the grid who'd never shopped there as a newbie.

So...I decided to conduct an experiment.
Taken at Orhalla Zander's lab at Thinkerer's Quests

Bare Rose "Doctor" costume,
"Roach" hair by Deviant Kitties
"Parched" skin from Domestic-V
"oculus glasses for the happy and beady eyed" by Pavig Lok

I would find some fresh newbies, give them money to spend at Bare Rose, and see what they come up with.

It was a LOT harder than I thought to find volunteers! I was reprimanded for "spamming" at Help Island Public, just for explaining out loud what I was up to. Finally I got about 10 people to return my questionnaire:

How old is your character?
Is this your first character?
Can you open a box?
Do you know how to change clothes?
Can you find things in your inventory?
Do you know how to use your camera controls?
Are you able to spend a few hours this weekend shopping and posing for photos?
Are you willing to have your photo and name posted on a blog?
Please fill in your yes/no answers, change the name of this note to your name and send it to Frequency Picnic.

Most of the respondents had been around too long, forgot to save their answers before they sent the notecard or didn't put their name on it, but I managed to find 3 volunteers, 2 of whom showed up:

Jock Socke, Days-old Newbie:

and StarLord Scribe, who'd been inworld for a month or so.

I dug into the pile of money I made DJ'ing the night before and gave my victims, er...subjects 400 lindens and about an hour to shop. StarLord emerged with a wonderful fantasy outfit from the popular Zodiac collection: "Virgo"

He didn't have time to spend all the money, but loved the store and went back later to buy some gifts for friends (All B@R clothes are +transfer, yay!) and some more for himself.

Unfortunately, as it turns out, Jock was a bit less experienced with the mechanics of being a virtual person than he thought, and he got hopelessly lost in his inventory -- this picture was taken right before he accidentally put on a tiny bear avatar, and even an hour of coaching from me couldn't get him back to his proper shape and outfit...

Exhausted, I sent him the link to one of Torley's Vidtuts on changing one's appearance and suggested we regroup later, but I haven't seen the poor guy since. I do hope he comes back.

It was a gratifying, if somewhat frustrating experience for me. The volunteers were very appreciative of my largesse, and I was glad to introduce people to the amazing fashion resource that is Bare Rose!
